A Day With Doug Smith

Yesterday I spent the afternoon with Ex-NHL Superstar and medical miracle Doug Smith. The day promised some video work, BBQ, and relaxation on the Ottawa river. The first thing we did when we arrived was head down to the beach and throw a couple lines in the water. Fishing is one of Doug’s favourite past times, he told us he spends most of his nights out on the dock reeling in many of the 40 species that inhabit the Ottawa River. The work part of our trip started with filming Doug sharing some of his wisdom about change and then we caught him reeling in a small catfish. Since the fish weren’t biting we finished off our filming by getting some shots of the beautiful waterfront Doug calls home.
Later, Doug and I thought we would have some fun so we began to throw a frisbee around. I got to see some tricks he picked up back when he was living in LA and playing for the Kings. I discovered that during the off season Doug spent his time on the California beaches playing frisbee, volleyball, and a variety of other beach activities. It was fun to see a C-level executive play like a kid again. Although in Doug’s life this is a common occurrence; he keeps a great work life balance.
We finished the evening off with some great BBQ and words of wisdom about business philosophy from Doug. He believes that you need strong company culture and philosophy in order to be successful, I tend to agree. He is currently sharing some of this wisdom in his recently published book, Thriving in Transitionand a book he was featured in The Power of the Platform. Here are a few of the principles Doug shared with me written here to the best of my memory.
You shouldn’t strive to be the best in the world; you should strive to be the best for the world.
Change happens, you can’t control it, you just have to know how to transition with change to create the best possible outcomes.
It’s fun to focus on aspects of the business that you are good at, but you have to focus on all of the aspects in order to be successful.
After supper I started on my way home feeling a little bit smarter. That’s the thing about hanging out with Doug, you always learn something. Whether it’s a better way to conduct business, or an improved outlook on life, he always has more to offer. Doug has proved himself as an athlete, he has recovered from a severe spinal cord injury, and has even experience success in the business world as the former President of Arc Stainless, but for Doug, I know this is only the beginning. This is why I follow Doug’s story; I can always look forward to learning something new and of course, to our next game of frisbee by the lake.
